When Should You Buy Organic?

The short answer here is that you should buy organic whenever possible and you can afford it in your budget, but the truth is that there is often a major offset in cost of Organic groceries and most of us “regular people” can’t actually afford to buy everything we’d like with that pretty little Organic label attached.

So, today I’m sharing the items I absolutely won’t buy without it, and why.

“The Dirty Dozen” list compiled by ewg.org contains fruits and vegetables which tested positive for nearly 50 chemicals (or more in some cases) when grown conventionally.  I always buy these items Organic:

  1. Strawberries
  2. Leafy greens like Spinach, Kale and Collards
  3. Nectarines
  4. Apples
  5. Peaches
  6. Pears
  7. Cherries
  8. Grapes
  9. Celery
  10. Tomatoes
  11. Bell Peppers
  12. Potatoes

I also have a couple other grocery items I am personally particular about buying organic which include:

  1. Lettuce
  2. Sweet Potatoes – If their regular counterpart is on the dirty dozen, there’s good reason these should be too.
  3. Soy Products – This includes edamame, tofu, tempeh, soy milks or creamers, and any other products containing soy. For my information, check out my post on Tofu.
  4. Other Legumes – Includes snap peas, green beans, sweet peas, and peanuts.
  5. Bread
